Tony Leung Chiu-wai appears on a Korean show, names “In the Mood for Love” as his signature work — delights over dessert and flashes a heart gesture

(Seoul, April 6) Award-winning actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai recently visited South Korea with director Ildikó Enyedi to promote their new film The Silent Friend. In addition to greeting audiences at cinemas, he also appeared on a local news program, which aired on April 5.

Behind-the-scenes footage released by the broadcaster showed Leung receiving a popular Korean treat—Dubai chocolate mochi—from the host. He responded warmly, making a heart gesture and even introducing himself in Korean, expressing his joy at returning to Seoul.

Speaking about his role as a neuroscientist in the film, Leung revealed it required one of his longest preparation periods. He immersed himself in the role by reading extensively and visiting universities to meet real neuroscientists. “The key is to believe you are that person,” he said, noting that the process also gave him a new perspective on plants.

Outside of acting, Leung shared his love for nature, enjoying water sports in the summer and skiing in the mountains during winter.

When asked about his signature “eye acting,” he explained that he tends to speak less in daily life, which leads him to express emotions through his gaze rather than gestures or exaggerated expressions.

Reflecting on his career, Leung said every film holds importance, but if he had to choose a defining work, it would be In the Mood for Love, directed by Wong Kar-wai. He credited the film for bringing him numerous awards and described the experience as “like returning to childhood.”

As for his happiest moments, Leung pointed to his 20-year collaboration with Wong Kar-wai, highlighting their shared creative vision and the opportunity to continuously refine his craft.
