Recently, comments made by three-time TVB Best Actor winner Roger Kwok during an interview have drawn attention, offering insight into the mindset of a seasoned actor navigating industry shifts and personal career transitions.
Speaking about the growing trend of short-form dramas, Kwok described the experience in pragmatic terms, noting that such productions often require less creative input, with actors primarily following directions. He acknowledged that compensation has become a key factor in accepting these roles. This candid perspective contrasts sharply with his past reputation for delivering nuanced performances, highlighting the evolving demands of different content formats.
Equally noteworthy was his comment on leaving TVB. Kwok revealed that the decision was “not entirely his own,” hinting at multiple underlying factors and leaving room for interpretation regarding the end of his long-standing association with the broadcaster.
At the same time, his professional focus has clearly shifted toward business. In December 2024, a company he co-founded with his family was successfully listed in Hong Kong. Since then, he has stated that he will prioritize corporate responsibilities while gradually reducing his involvement in the entertainment industry.
Embracing his new role, Kwok emphasized the responsibilities that come with leadership, including overseeing decisions and being accountable to employees, which now occupy most of his time.
From executing roles in short dramas to shaping strategic decisions in business, Kwok’s transition reflects a broader repositioning of priorities. His journey is less about leaving acting behind, and more about redefining purpose and responsibility at a different stage of life.
