(Ireland, April 9) Irish actor and writer Michael Patrick, known for his appearance in Season 6 of the TV series Game of Thrones, has passed away at the age of 35 after battling motor neuron disease. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his wife.
According to foreign media reports, Patrick was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND), commonly known as ALS, on February 1, 2023. In February this year, he was told he had around one year to live. Despite the prognosis, he remained optimistic, sharing that he still had many plans ahead. Tragically, just two months later, he succumbed to the illness.
His wife, Naomi Sheehan, shared in a statement on Wednesday (April 8) that he passed away peacefully on the evening of April 7 at a hospital in Northern Ireland. He had been admitted 10 days earlier and received dedicated care from medical staff. Surrounded by family and close friends, he spent his final moments in peace.
She described him as an inspiration to everyone who knew him, not only during his illness but throughout his entire life. “Michael lived a full and joyful life. He was vibrant, full of energy, and his laughter was truly infectious,” she wrote.
In her tribute, she also quoted Irish poet Brendan Behan: “The most important things in life are to get something to eat, something to drink, and somebody to love.” She encouraged others to live simply and love deeply.
Motor Neuron Disease is a progressive and incurable neurological condition that affects the nerves controlling movement, leading to muscle weakness, stiffness, and eventual loss of basic functions such as walking, speaking, eating, and breathing. The most common form is ALS, though Patrick’s exact diagnosis was not disclosed.
Throughout his career, Patrick appeared in several productions, including Game of Thrones (Season 6), My Left Nut, and Blue Lights. Even after his diagnosis, he continued working on creative projects, including Blasts from the Past, The Spectacular, and the German TV film Mordlichtern – Tod auf den Färöer Inseln, set to release in 2025.
Following the announcement, fans around the world have expressed their grief. His body will be laid to rest in Northern Ireland, with a memorial service scheduled for April 13.
