Last month, former Ukrainian model Victoria Yakimova sparked widespread attention after being appointed as Ukraine’s honorary consul to the Dominican Republic. However, just two weeks later, she was abruptly dismissed, fueling ongoing controversy online.

According to foreign media, the 37-year-old Yakimova previously worked as a fashion model and had posed for a number of provocative photos, including nude artistic shoots. Despite this, her past did not initially prevent her from entering the diplomatic sphere. Photos of her meeting Dominican officials suggested she took pride in her new role.

Notably, this was not her first interaction with global figures. In 2017, she reportedly met King Charles III, then Prince of Wales. She later described the encounter as unforgettable, recalling the grandeur of the palace and how surreal the experience felt.

However, her unconventional background soon became the center of scrutiny. Reports indicate that Ukrainian authorities revoked her diplomatic status not only due to her past public image but also because she had previously worn a traditional Russian kokoshnik headdress in photos—an issue that carries added sensitivity amid current geopolitical tensions.

Commentator Marina Danilchuk criticized the situation on social media, questioning whether her provocative images or the Russian cultural reference was more troubling. She also mocked the decision to appoint her in the first place, highlighting the unusual overlap between modeling and diplomacy.

As of now, Yakimova has not issued a new statement regarding her dismissal. However, she previously defended herself, stating that she never hid her modeling background and emphasized that modern women have the right to redefine their paths and pursue value across different fields.

She also revealed that the honorary consul position was unpaid, with all related expenses covered personally, describing the role as demanding rather than glamorous.

The incident has sparked broader discussions about public image, cultural sensitivity, and the expectations placed on diplomatic figures.
