The iconic Mandopop hit Mouse Loves Rice continues to resonate with audiences even two decades after its release. Recently, reports claiming that original singer Yang Chengang earned 170 million RMB (approximately RM100 million) from the song quickly trended online.

In response, Yang clarified that the figure represents total project revenue rather than his personal earnings. Speaking during a recent performance in his hometown Wuhan, he explained that the income was generated through multiple channels, including mobile ringtone downloads, commercial performance licensing, and album sales.

As both the songwriter and performer, Yang noted that his actual income was significantly lower after deducting approximately 40% in taxes, along with promotional costs and team revenue sharing. He added that earlier variety show editing had taken his statements out of context, leading to widespread misunderstanding that the full amount belonged to him personally.

Reflecting on the song’s peak success, Yang revealed that in 2004 alone, Mouse Loves Rice achieved up to 6 million ringtone downloads in a single month. At a rate of 2 RMB per download, this translated to about 12 million RMB (approximately RM6.96 million) in monthly revenue. Combined with other income streams, the total project revenue could indeed reach the widely reported 170 million RMB.
