Manchester United Secures New Goalkeeper on a Free Transfer, Youth Talents Depart in Deadline Drama, and ‘New Messi’ Nets Hat-Trick in Just 30 Minutes!

Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of promising goalkeeper Abdulla Al-Hammadi on a free transfer, following his successful trial earlier this month. The 20-year-old, formerly with UAE Pro League side Al Wasl and captain of the UAE U18 national team, has been pursuing an opportunity to test himself in English football.

Earlier this year in March, Al-Hammadi underwent trials at Everton, where he impressed by keeping a clean sheet for their U21s against Bolton’s B team at the newly built Spellow Lane’s Hildekinson Stadium — making history as the first goalkeeper to keep a shutout at the venue. In August, he arrived at United as the club sought a replacement for Hubert Graczyk, the former Arsenal academy graduate whose contract expired after just a year at Old Trafford.

Al-Hammadi’s standout performances in training left United’s academy coaches impressed, securing him a spot in the youth setup. As a free agent, there was no need for the deal to be completed before the summer transfer deadline, but his registration will still require some time to process. It’s important to note that his arrival is purely for the academy ranks and will not affect first-team goalkeeping recruitment plans.

Academy Transfer Movements

The academy transfer market is far more active than the first team’s, and several players completed moves on deadline day.

• Harry Amass – The talented left-back, who has already made his first-team debut for United, has joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on loan. The club, once under a transfer embargo due to unpaid wages, has promised Amass regular first-team football. United prioritised playing time in considering loan offers, and with summer signing Diego León arriving, Amass was earmarked for a loan move, missing the senior pre-season camp.
• Zach Baumann – The 18-year-old midfielder, part of United’s U18 title-winning squad and a Ukrainian youth international, has joined Norwich City on a permanent deal. While no fixed transfer fee was involved, performance-related clauses could see United receive future payments if Baumann excels.
• Ethan Ennis – The 20-year-old forward heads to Fleetwood Town in League Two on loan. Having scored four goals and provided two assists in seven games this season, Ennis had attracted interest from clubs including Plymouth. He spent last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers in League One, making 17 appearances.
• Ethan Williams – After signing a new contract until 2028 (with an additional one-year extension option), the winger joins Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership on loan. Williams impressed in pre-season under Rúben Amorim, even scoring for the first team. Last season, he netted his first senior goal during a loan spell at Cheltenham Town in League Two. His move now awaits only international clearance.

U21 Victory and U18 Star Performance

It was a weekend to remember for United’s youth sides. The U21s clinched a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in Premier League 2, with Obi Martin finding the net.

However, the true spotlight fell on the U18s, where 14-year-old sensation JJ Gabriel — dubbed “the New Messi” — stole the show. In a dominant 4-0 win over Derby County, Gabriel scored a blistering hat-trick in under 30 minutes, striking in the 5th, 14th, and 27th minutes.

Footage revealed that his first two goals came courtesy of goalkeeper errors, allowing him tap-ins, while his third was a composed low left-foot finish into the far corner on the counterattack.

Gabriel, son of former Irish international Joe Oceluir, is too young to feature in this season’s FA Youth Cup due to age restrictions. Nonetheless, United have high hopes for him — having recently renewed his deal, assigned him the club’s highest-ever shirt number (95), and secured him a sponsorship with Nike. He is already training regularly with Rúben Amorim’s first-team squad.
