(Hong Kong, April 15) The Hong Kong entertainment industry is mourning the passing of veteran actor Kong To, who died at the age of 89. The news was confirmed by actor Tin Kai-man, prompting an outpouring of condolences from audiences and industry peers.
In his later years, Kong To’s health had drawn concern. He experienced hearing loss and required the use of hearing aids. In interviews conducted a few years ago, his voice appeared frail and his physical condition had declined, though he remained connected to the industry he devoted his life to.
Born into a family deeply rooted in Cantonese opera, his mother Fung Hap Wah was a renowned performer, while his uncle Fung Hap Wan and aunt Chu Sau Wan were also prominent figures in the field. Immersed in this artistic environment from a young age, he began performing with a Cantonese opera troupe in Foshan, building a strong foundation in acting.
In the 1960s, he entered the film industry under the stage name “Kong Tao,” later transitioning to television in the 1970s. He spent most of his career with Rediffusion Television and Asia Television (ATV), appearing in numerous classic dramas. Known for his composed and natural acting style, he became a respected character actor, particularly recognized for his memorable villain roles.
Kong To never married. He once shared that his younger years were marked by a carefree lifestyle and several relationships that ultimately did not last due to various circumstances. In later life, he chose to remain single, embracing a more peaceful and independent way of living.
His decades-long contribution to Hong Kong’s golden era of film and television leaves behind a lasting legacy, remembered fondly by generations of viewers.
