In an all-Chinese clash at the second round of the 2026 World Snooker Championship, defending champion Zhao Xintong defeated Ding Junhui 13–9 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The match unfolded in three phases: a 4–4 tie in the opening session, Zhao edging ahead 9–7 in the second, and then maintaining control in the final session to seal the win. He will next face Shaun Murphy.
Despite the victory, Zhao remained humble: “Ding is the pioneer of Chinese snooker. Even if I win several world titles, I can’t surpass his impact. I’m just someone continuing the journey.”
He admitted the pressure was intense: “I said I wanted to enjoy the match, but that wasn’t the reality. Everyone was watching—it’s impossible not to feel it. Still, I’m very happy to win.” After the match, Ding simply told him: “Keep going.”
Zhao also reflected on the shift in expectations: “Last year, I could afford to lose. This year, I don’t want to—and that brings pressure.” Looking ahead, he even joked toward Murphy: “No safety play—let’s go all-out attack!”
Ding, meanwhile, took a broader perspective: “Snooker is evolving. It can’t always revolve around me. I hope more attention goes to other Chinese players.” He highlighted rising talents like Chang Bingyu and Wu Yize, emphasizing that success takes time and consistency.
He also urged fans to be more understanding: “Winning a title doesn’t mean you’ll keep winning. Athletes need time to adjust. Sometimes expectations are too harsh—people should try sports themselves to understand the pressure.”
More than just a result, this match symbolized a passing of the torch in Chinese snooker.
