On April 26, history was made at the London Marathon. Sebastian Savi finished in 1:59:30, setting a new marathon world record and becoming the first athlete to break the two-hour barrier in an official race.

What made the achievement even more remarkable was his negative split strategy—running the second half faster than the first. He reached halfway in 1:00:29 but completed the second half in a stunning 59:01.

His pacing breakdown highlights the brilliance:

  • First 5 km: 14:14 (2:51/km)
  • 5–10 km: 14:21
  • 10–15 km: 14:35 (slowest segment)
  • Halfway: 1:00:29

After maintaining a steady rhythm up to 30 km, Savi dramatically accelerated:

  • 30–35 km: 13:54
  • 35–40 km: 13:42 (2:45/km pace)
  • Final stretch: 5:51 (around 2:40/km pace)

This late-race surge defied conventional marathon pacing and showcased extraordinary endurance and control.

Based on this performance, 1:59:30 may not even represent Savi’s true limit. With such a powerful finish, the boundaries of human endurance may be pushed even further in the near future.
