Wu Jing Wants to Try Malaysia's 'Empurau' Fish, Hopes to Recreate Jackie Chan's Iconic Police Story 3 Action Scene

Chinese action star Wu Jing made a long-awaited return to Malaysia to attend the 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest), receive the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award at the Golden Global Awards, and meet fans during a special screening of The Wild Blade: Desert Storm.
Joking that he had already enjoyed plenty of durians during the trip, Wu said the one Malaysian delicacy he still hoped to try was the famous Empurau fish, which actress Lee Sinje had highly recommended to him.
Wu revealed that he met with Lee Sinje and director Oxide Pang during his visit and praised their passion for filmmaking after learning they were preparing a new project together.
When asked whether he would consider filming in Malaysia, Wu said he has always been inspired by Jackie Chan and would love to recreate the scale of Police Story 3, which was partly filmed in Malaysia.
He enthusiastically recalled the movie's iconic action sequences, including train stunts, helicopter scenes, rooftop fights and Michelle Yeoh's action sequences. He even laughed while mentioning the unforgettable scene in which Jackie Chan lands on a pile of durians, joking that it "must have hurt." Wu said filming an action blockbuster of that scale in Malaysia would be an incredible experience.
He added that whenever he shoots overseas, he hopes to incorporate local culture into his films. Places such as Sipadan Island and Malacca remain on his travel list, and he hopes to explore them in future productions.
Speaking after the screening, Wu admitted he had hesitated to produce several martial arts films in recent years because of uncertainty over audience demand. However, after discussions with legendary action director Yuen Woo-ping, they agreed that if they kept waiting, martial arts cinema would continue to decline. That conviction ultimately led them to move forward with The Wild Blade: Desert Storm.
The film brings together four generations of action performers, from veterans such as Yuen Woo-ping, Zhang Xinyan and Wu Bin to a child actor born in 2020. Wu said the project is a tribute to nearly a century of martial arts filmmaking and aims to preserve its legacy for future generations.
He also spoke about his long-awaited on-screen showdown with Jet Li, revealing that he specifically recreated the iconic upside-down kick from Fist of Legend as a tribute. Wu praised the 63-year-old star's professionalism, revealing that Jet Li spent 21 days training in isolation before filming and even travelled to Xinjiang early to familiarize himself with the production.
Wu's warm personality also won over the audience. He surprised fans by walking into the theater before the host finished the introduction, smiling and saying, "I heard everyone calling my name." When a fan later called him "cute," Wu jokingly replied, "Since you think I'm cute, I'll give you a signed photo."
After the event, hundreds of fans queued for autographs, and Wu patiently signed as many items as possible before attending the Golden Global Awards ceremony, where he will officially receive the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award.
