BEIJING, July 14 – Twenty-five years after the success of Shaolin Soccer, Stephen Chow has returned to the familiar blend of martial arts and football with his latest film, Kung Fu Soccer Girls. This time, however, the story centres on a women's football team.

Since its release, the film has sparked sharply divided reactions among audiences and critics.

Many viewers argued that the storyline offers little innovation, saying it closely mirrors the structure of Shaolin Soccer and relies too heavily on nostalgia rather than introducing fresh ideas.

The film's visual effects have also drawn criticism, with some audiences describing the CGI as overly artificial and dated. Others compared certain scenes to low-budget AI-generated online videos, saying the production quality fell short of expectations.

Chow's signature slapstick comedy has likewise divided opinion. While some fans felt the exaggerated humour no longer resonates with modern audiences, others believed the jokes lacked the charm that made his earlier classics memorable.

The casting of popular stars Dilraba Dilmurat and Lay Zhang also became a talking point. Some viewers welcomed their commercial appeal, while others felt their presence diluted the unique flavour traditionally associated with Hong Kong comedies.

Despite the criticism, the film has also received strong support. China's state media outlet CCTV Entertainment praised Kung Fu Soccer Girls for preserving Stephen Chow's distinctive comedic style by blending traditional Chinese martial arts such as Baguazhang and Qinggong with football, creating a fast-paced and light-hearted comedy that offers audiences a welcome escape.

The story follows a women's football team competing in the "Ultimate Champions Cup", highlighting how the players overcome setbacks, resolve conflicts and build teamwork along the way.

Beyond sports, the film also explores themes of growth and self-discovery. As the protagonists gradually let go of their obsession with winning and embrace Bruce Lee's philosophy of "Be water, my friend," they rediscover the simple joy of playing football, delivering a message about perseverance, passion and staying true to one's original dreams.
