Jean Todt Reflects on 19-Year Romance with Michelle Yeoh and His Enduring Bond with Michael Schumacher

(Shanghai, June 28) Jean Todt, former Ferrari team principal and husband of Oscar-winning Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, recently opened up about their nearly two-decade love story while also sharing heartfelt memories of his close friendship with Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

Speaking on Chinese host Jin Xing's YouTube programme Jin Xing Official, Todt revealed that he first met Yeoh in Shanghai on June 4, 2004. Just over a month later, on July 26, he proposed to her. However, the couple did not officially marry until July 27, 2023—6,992 days after they first met.

Explaining the long engagement, Todt said both of them were deeply committed to their careers. He also revealed that he had promised Yeoh's father, Yeoh Kian Teik, that he would one day marry her—a promise he was ultimately able to fulfil.

Speaking fondly of his wife, Todt said his favourite film starring Yeoh is The Lady, in which she portrayed Aung San Suu Kyi.

Reflecting on his years leading Ferrari, Todt described the period as both demanding and rewarding. He recalled insisting on signing two-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher in 1996, believing the German driver was essential to Ferrari's long-term success.

Although Ferrari narrowly missed the championship in three consecutive seasons from 1997 to 1999, rumours emerged that Todt could be dismissed. Schumacher reportedly stood firmly behind him, declaring, "If he leaves, I leave too." Their mutual trust ultimately helped Ferrari secure five consecutive Formula One drivers' titles from 2000 to 2004.

Discussing Schumacher's skiing accident in 2013, Todt said the seven-time world champion is "still fighting" and revealed that he remains actively involved with the Keep Fighting Foundation.

Since stepping away from motorsport, Todt has devoted himself to public service as the United Nations Special Envoy for Road Safety. He also authored The Silent Pandemic on the Road, hoping to raise global awareness of road safety. He believes that maintaining curiosity and a constant desire to learn is the key to continual growth.
