Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage’s beachfront mansion in Malibu, California, has been threatened by a massive sinkhole after part of its driveway suddenly collapsed.
The sinkhole measures approximately 9 metres by 18 metres and is around 7.6 metres deep. Located in the gated Sea Level Drive community, the collapse occurred close to the mansion’s garage, with a portable toilet and metal fencing also falling into the hole.
Local authorities said powerful swells linked to the remnants of Tropical Storm Marie, combined with days of heavy rain, caused severe coastal erosion and weakened the soil beneath the area.
The collapse also damaged an underground natural gas pipeline, prompting an emergency shutdown of gas supplies. Authorities declared a local emergency and red-tagged seven nearby homes, preventing residents from entering them. Another 24 homes were affected after road damage disrupted access.
Cage purchased the four-storey, approximately 4,000-square-foot beachfront property in 2024 for around US$10.5 million. The mansion was undergoing renovations when the collapse occurred, and Cage and his wife were not inside. No injuries were reported.
Authorities are now assessing the foundation and structural condition of the property.
