De Gea Earns Fresh Recognition: Named in Serie A Best Goalkeeper Nominees, 3-Year Contract Offer & Multiple Suitors

At 34, David De Gea has reestablished his reputation after a challenging period. Following a 12-year spell at Manchester United, he was left clubless for nearly a year after the Red Devils opted not to renew his contract last summer. However, De Gea found a new lease on life at Fiorentina, earning a nomination for the best goalkeeper in Serie A this season and a 3-year contract extension offer from the Viola. Meanwhile, Ligue 1 club Monaco has joined the race to sign him, and there are rumors that Manchester United may consider bringing him back following Ten Hag’s departure. De Gea has yet to make a decision, but his talents are once again recognized by the footballing world.

In the summer of 2023, De Gea’s career hit rock bottom. His contract with Manchester United expired after the 2022-23 season, and the club chose not to renew it, leaving him unemployed for almost a year.

De Gea had been a stalwart at United for 12 years, but manager Erik ten Hag lost faith in him, viewing his high salary as a burden to the team. After leaving, De Gea was forced to train privately at home until last year when he received a fresh opportunity.

De Gea signed a short-term one-year contract with Fiorentina, with a weekly salary of just £33,000—a 90% cut compared to his wages at Manchester United. However, he quickly reclaimed a starting spot with his determination and hard work. Throughout this season, he made 42 appearances, kept 11 clean sheets, and conceded an average of just 1.19 goals per game, earning widespread praise.

A week ago, Serie A announced the shortlist for the season’s best eleven, and De Gea was among the top three nominated goalkeepers. With his contract set to expire at the end of June, Fiorentina’s management is eager to keep him and has offered him a 3-year deal. Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A this season, securing a spot in next year’s Europa League, and hope De Gea can continue to play a key role.

However, De Gea has yet to decide on his future. Well-known journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Ligue 1 powerhouse Monaco has joined the chase and is negotiating with De Gea.

There are also suggestions that Manchester United might consider re-signing him, especially after Ten Hag’s exit has left the goalkeeper position in flux. Wayne Rooney recently said: “If I were in charge of Manchester United, I’d consider re-signing De Gea. I believe United will miss him.” United’s current first-choice keeper, Onana, has faced criticism, which could open the door for De Gea’s return to Old Trafford.
