Musk Reveals Disagreements with Trump Administration Before Stepping Down

Elon Musk has confirmed that during his tenure as a “special government employee” (SGE), he had some differences of opinion with the Trump administration, particularly concerning the work of the so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) and the new tax reform bill. While Musk has been a significant Republican donor, providing up to $300 million in support of Trump’s re-election campaign, he said in an interview with CBS that he did not fully agree with all government actions. Observers speculate that these differences could impact Musk’s relationship with Trump moving forward.

Recently, Musk announced on social media platform X that he is ending his brief stint in the Trump administration. Despite his status as a key financial backer of the Republican Party over the past year, Musk made it clear that he does not completely endorse all of the Trump administration’s policies.

Trump had appointed Musk to lead the newly created DOGE, an informal body not recognized as part of the White House’s official governmental framework. Musk’s role was limited to a 130-day term as an SGE, which is set to expire at the end of this month.

In an interview for CBS News’ “Sunday Morning,” Musk openly acknowledged his disagreements with the Trump administration. Although he did not specify the exact areas of disagreement, he admitted to feeling caught in a “difficult position” when expressing dissatisfaction. “I don’t want to publicly oppose the government, but I also don’t want to take responsibility for everything it does,” Musk said.

Musk also criticized Trump’s latest tax reform plan, which was passed by the House of Representatives last week and includes major tax cuts, reductions in social spending, and increased border security measures. While Trump has described the legislation as “big and beautiful,” Musk expressed skepticism, saying, “A bill can be big, and it can be beautiful, but I’m not sure it can be both.”

Analysts have noted that while Musk’s departure appears to be tied to the end of his temporary term, there were already signs of tension within the White House. Musk had previously clashed with White House trade advisor Navarro and Treasury Secretary Bessent, possibly contributing to this split.

This Friday, Trump and Musk are scheduled to appear together at a press conference in the Oval Office. The public is watching closely to see if this appearance can dispel rumors of an ongoing rift between them.
