Chelsea Reject to Buy Sancho; Man United Open to £20M Sale to Leverkusen, Ten Hag Could Be an Obstacle

According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United has been informed by Chelsea that the Blues will not make Jadon Sancho's loan move permanent at the end of the season. Instead, they are willing to pay a £5 million compensation fee to avoid the £25 million obligation to buy.

The 25-year-old England winger joined Chelsea on loan last summer. Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea had an option to make the deal permanent depending on their final league position. However, due to underwhelming performances—just 3 goals and 5 assists in the Premier League—Chelsea has opted out. They've already targeted other wingers and are reportedly even interested in United's Alejandro Garnacho.

If Sancho returns, United will need to find another buyer. There's no spot for him in new manager Rúben Amorim’s plans, and returning to Carrington would be awkward. Sancho once used the word “freedom” when commenting on Rashford’s loan to Aston Villa—causing unrest within the club and fan base.

As a result, United is willing to accept offers below £20 million. Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are rumored suitors, though Dortmund insiders say a return is unlikely. Leverkusen has emerged as a potential destination, especially if midfield star Florian Wirtz departs for Bayern Munich—freeing up transfer funds.

However, Sancho’s weekly wage—over £250,000—is a major obstacle. He would either need to accept a pay cut or have United cover part of his wages. Otherwise, he risks not playing at all in his final contract year.

Ironically, Sancho's potential move to Leverkusen could be impacted by former manager Erik ten Hag, with whom he famously clashed. Xabi Alonso is set to leave Leverkusen and take over at Real Madrid, and Ten Hag is reportedly one of the frontrunners to replace him. If Ten Hag lands the job, Sancho's move could fall apart. Former Premier League star Cesc Fàbregas is also a candidate for the role, and Sancho would likely prefer him over Ten Hag.

Last summer, Ten Hag insisted their feud was “over,” but few believe the two can work together again. The 55-year-old Dutch coach is also linked to RB Leipzig, though the German club is reportedly more interested in Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Man United’s new owner, is also eager to offload Sancho. Focused on aggressive cost-cutting, he aims to shed high earners from the squad. Recently, Ratcliffe sparked controversy by refusing to provide free Europa League final tickets for all club staff, instead opting for a lottery system and free drinks during a staff viewing party in Manchester—claiming it’s to “leave more tickets for fans.”
