[NBA Playoffs Update] In Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals, the Denver Nuggets fell 105-112 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, trailing in the series. Although the game remained close through three quarters, Denver collapsed again in the fourth, exposing four key issues that could shift the momentum of the series.
1. Severe Fatigue, Collapse in the Fourth Quarter
The Nuggets’ fatigue became glaring in the final period: their shooting percentage plummeted and defensive intensity dropped. Nikola Jokić, though managing a key three-pointer and a bucket inside, appeared visibly exhausted. With limited rotation and a tight schedule, the team’s core players are clearly worn down.
2. Defensive Breakdown: Jokić Repeatedly Targeted
Denver attempted to adjust their defense by trapping, but it only allowed OKC to target Jokić more easily. Under foul pressure, he couldn’t defend aggressively, giving OKC repeated open looks and rim access. After Westbrook subbed out, Luguentz Dort hit three consecutive threes, completely tearing through Denver’s perimeter defense.
3. Michael Porter Jr. Off Both Ends
Michael Porter Jr. was a liability on both offense and defense, shooting just 1-for-7. His poor form hurt the Nuggets’ zone defense and overall rhythm. If he doesn’t bounce back in Game 6, Denver will remain vulnerable on both ends.
4. Jokić Alone: Lack of Support in Clutch Moments
Outside of Jokić, no Nuggets player made consistent scoring contributions in the fourth. The team shot 5-of-21 (24%) from the field and a dreadful 1-of-12 (8%) from three-point range. With such inefficiency, the Nuggets lacked the firepower to compete in the clutch.
Conclusion:
To force a Game 7, Denver must address their fatigue, improve bench depth, restructure defensive schemes, and rely on more than just Jokić. Otherwise, this series may soon come to an end.
