Manchester United’s €25M Bid for “Reincarnated Zidane” Likely to Be Rejected: Cherki Eyes European Competition, Red Devils Losing Allure
According to Sky Germany, Manchester United have submitted a €25 million bid for Lyon's rising star Rayan Cherki. The 21-year-old French playmaker made a strong impression by scoring in both legs against United in the Europa League quarterfinals. However, with no European competition next season and interest from several elite clubs, United’s offer may not be enough to sway Cherki or his agents.
Cherki, whose contract is nearing its end, has long been on United’s radar, and initial contact was made during their recent Europa League clash. However, the competition is fierce—clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool have also shown serious interest. Cherki has recorded 12 goals and 20 assists in 44 games this season, winning the Ligue 1 and Europa League assist titles, along with being the Ligue 1 dribble king. He was also named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Year and has confirmed he will leave Lyon this summer.
Nicknamed the “Reincarnated Zidane” by football gamers due to his in-game traits and resemblance to the French legend—ambidextrous, technically gifted, and of Algerian descent—Cherki has also recently earned his first senior call-up to the French national team.
But convincing him to join Manchester United is no easy task. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, the club’s competitive edge has steadily declined. Though still regarded as a global giant, United’s appeal to top young talents has significantly weakened—especially without the lure of European football.
British tabloid The Sun even mocked the situation, "congratulating" United manager Rúben Amorim for achieving early Premier League survival next season. With up to 10 English clubs potentially in Europe, United will be watching from the sidelines. This will mark only the second time in 35 years that United miss out on European competition—a scenario The Sun joked could “help them avoid relegation.”
Indeed, United’s league form has been dire. With 39 points from 37 games, they have not even reached the symbolic 40-point safety mark. If not for the weaknesses of Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton, United might already be in a relegation fight.
In the Europa League final, United suffered a fourth defeat of the season to Spurs—three of those being clean sheets. Striker Rasmus Højlund has looked Championship-level, while goalkeeper André Onana continues to commit basic blunders. Captain Bruno Fernandes, though talented, made costly mistakes in dangerous areas, one of which led directly to Tottenham's winning goal.
Manager Amorim has faced heavy criticism for rigidly sticking to his 3-4-3 system and trusting underperformers like Mason Mount. His decision to bench Alejandro Garnacho sparked a backlash from Garnacho’s family, who slammed the team’s "garbage" season on social media—exposing deep fractures within the squad.
As one British journalist aptly put it: “United are most certainly not united.”
So, when Manchester United come calling, it’s fair to ask: Why would Rayan Cherki say yes?
