China's FAST Teams Up with South Africa's MeerKAT, Redefines Galactic Globular Cluster Magnetic Field Mapping

China's FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope) and South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope have joined forces for the first time in a groundbreaking collaboration. This project, conducted in partnership with astronomers from Italy, Australia, and Germany, achieved the most comprehensive measurements to date of globular cluster magnetic field gradients and upper limits of ionized gas, creating an unprecedented map of the Milky Way’s magnetic field.

Globular clusters are among the oldest and most mysterious objects in our galaxy, containing large numbers of pulsars. This collaborative effort pushed observational limits by detecting polarization rotation signals from 43 pulsars and unexpectedly found that seven globular clusters are “unusually clean,” with no detectable ionized gas. This challenges current theories and suggests that powerful gas-clearing mechanisms exist within these clusters.

This work not only deepens our understanding of the Milky Way’s magnetic fields and cluster evolution but also lays a solid foundation for future explorations of pulsar glitches, interstellar turbulence, and the potential search for extraterrestrial civilizations.
