According to Taiwanese media reports, the U.S. Department of Commerce plans to impose tariffs on imported chips, triggering a strong backlash from TSMC. TSMC submitted an eight-page letter to the U.S. side, highlighting its substantial contributions to the U.S. economy and exports through its investments and manufacturing facilities in the U.S. It also suggested accelerating infrastructure project approvals, requesting tariff exemptions. TSMC’s firm declaration that it would “slow down construction if tariffs are imposed” has sent shockwaves through the industry.

In contrast, the Lai administration’s attitude has drawn criticism. Taiwanese media pointed out that in the face of U.S. pressure, the Lai administration has been eager to show deference and make concessions, lacking TSMC’s strong resolve and thorough arguments.
