Bitcoin Anchored in Global Storm: Down 11.5%, Yet ETFs Keep Flowing In

Amid global economic turmoil and geopolitical tension, the cryptocurrency market is undergoing significant volatility. Bitcoin (BTC), as the industry’s flagship asset, has dropped more than 11.5% from its May highs. However, despite ongoing liquidation pressure, institutional investors continue to inject capital via spot ETFs, providing some resilience to the market.

Market Sell-Off and Liquidation Spike

According to Bitfinex Alpha, crypto markets have seen over $2.6 billion in total liquidations since June. In just three days, long positions were wiped out by over $400 million daily, signaling a sharp deterioration in investor sentiment. Altcoins like Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) fell more than 20%, triggering broad-based deleveraging.

ETF Inflows Offer Support

Despite the turbulence, Bitcoin spot ETFs saw over $1.02 billion in net inflows, suggesting institutions are accumulating at lower prices. While derivatives markets are being deleveraged, strong spot demand is helping BTC stabilize between $94,000 and $110,000. The future of Bitcoin depends on sustained ETF inflows and a recovery in overall sentiment.

Macro Pressure and the Fed’s Stance

The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged in June but warned of persistent inflation and the risks posed by new tariffs. Chair Jerome Powell highlighted that tariffs could “significantly” raise consumer prices, complicating monetary policy outlooks.

Geopolitical tension in the Middle East—especially around the Strait of Hormuz—is further disrupting global oil logistics. Surging freight rates and tanker delays have revived inflation fears, putting pressure on global central banks to maintain caution.

Consumer Weakness and Second-Wave Inflation Risk

U.S. retail sales dipped in May, led by declines in auto, fuel, and dining categories. However, core retail data remained resilient, indicating discretionary spending strength. Meanwhile, tariff concerns have pushed wholesalers to stock up, raising restocking costs and fueling fears of a “second wave” of inflation—possibly delaying the Fed’s rate cuts.

Crypto and Politics: A Growing Intersection

On the political front, former President Donald Trump disclosed over $600 million in crypto-related income, including earnings from $TRUMP tokens and blockchain ventures—raising ethical concerns over his financial ties.

Internationally, Vietnam passed landmark legislation granting legal status to crypto assets starting in 2026, aiming to attract blockchain innovation. In contrast, Iran’s largest crypto exchange Nobitex suffered a politically motivated cyberattack, highlighting crypto’s increasing exposure to geopolitical conflict.

Final Thoughts: A Volatile Yet Promising Crypto Era

While Bitcoin remains pressured by short-term volatility, persistent ETF inflows and shifting regulatory landscapes are quietly reinforcing its long-term value proposition. Amid macro uncertainty, demand for decentralized, inflation-resistant assets may be poised for renewed momentum.
