From Ecstasy to Heartbreak in 20 Minutes: Di María Bids Farewell to Europe—No More “Angel” on the Continent

In what may go down as one of football's most emotionally charged matches, 37-year-old Ángel Di María made his final appearance on European soil. In the Club World Cup Round of 16, Benfica clashed with Chelsea in a five-hour epic that spanned a thunderstorm delay and emotional extremes.
Chelsea led 1–0 with minutes to go when lightning and heavy storms halted the game for 106 minutes. Upon resumption in the 86th minute, Di María became the hero. In the 92nd minute, Chelsea’s Gusto committed a handball in the box. Calm and composed, Di María stepped up and slotted the penalty home, equalizing for Benfica in the 95th minute. It was his fourth goal of the tournament—all from the spot—and a moment of pure redemption.
His family erupted in joy from the stands. But joy was short-lived. In extra time, Benfica suffered a red card, and within 9 minutes, Chelsea netted three goals through Nkunku, Neto, and Hall. The score ended 4–1. Di María stood on the pitch, eyes downcast, emotions overwhelming—his face told a story of exhaustion, pride, and quiet resignation.
With Benfica eliminated, Di María’s European chapter officially ends. He will return to Rosario Central in Argentina, the club he left in 2007 to begin his journey to stardom. Eighteen years later, he leaves behind a legacy forged at Benfica, Real Madrid, PSG, and Manchester United.
Even in his final season, he remained prolific: 44 appearances, 19 goals, and 10 assists. At the Club World Cup, he delivered 4 crucial goals. He didn’t fade away—he fought to the end.
There will be no more “Angel” in Europe. Di María exits the stage with grace, leaving behind not just memories, but an era.
