On July 6, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump responded to billionaire Elon Musk’s announcement of forming a new political party called “The American Party.” Trump said that while Musk “can have some fun” with the idea, he personally thinks it is “ridiculous.”

On July 5, Musk announced the creation of a new party independent of both the Republican and Democratic parties. He claimed the party would represent about 80% of America’s moderate voters and aims to win seats in both houses of Congress in next year’s midterm elections.

Under U.S. law, a new political party must undergo a complex certification process to qualify for elections, including holding caucuses or conventions, electing interim officials, and officially registering the party’s name. It remains unclear whether Musk’s “American Party” has initiated these procedures.

This announcement came amid escalating tensions between Musk and the Trump administration over the recent “Bigger and Better” tax and spending bill. The tech mogul’s foray into politics continues to attract attention for its potential impact on the American political landscape.
