“Let’s See What Happens Tomorrow”: Trump Hints at Major Ukraine Arms Package with NATO Backing
On July 14, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce a new military aid plan for Ukraine, which may include offensive weapons and Patriot air defense systems. Trump stated the equipment will be supplied via NATO and funded entirely by allied nations. His tone on Russia has shifted notably, moving from negotiation-focused to increasingly critical in recent weeks.
Trump Hints at Offensive Aid to Ukraine: “Let’s See What Happens Tomorrow”
In a marked shift from his previously cautious stance, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled a major change in his Ukraine policy. On July 13, he revealed that the United States would supply Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine via NATO, and hinted at a larger military support package set to be unveiled the next day.
According to reports by U.S. media, this new package may include offensive weapons—marking the first time Trump has authorized such aid to Ukraine. Two anonymous sources told Axios the plan would be NATO-funded, with the U.S. providing the equipment.
“They desperately need this,” Trump said at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. “We’ll supply all kinds of very advanced military gear. For us, it’s business.” However, he declined to disclose quantities or which NATO members will cover the costs.
NATO Chief’s Visit to Washington Could Be Key
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is visiting Washington from July 14–15. During his trip, he will meet with Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Trump confirmed Ukraine will be the top agenda item in his meeting with Rutte, signaling a coordinated move with NATO on the new arms initiative.
In June, Trump stated the U.S. had reached a deal with NATO to supply Ukraine through the alliance, with NATO covering 100% of the expenses.
From Diplomacy to Disappointment: Trump’s Changing Tone on Russia
Despite frequent calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this year—many of which Trump described as “productive”—recent developments have strained that narrative. After a July call with Putin, Trump admitted being “disappointed with the lack of progress,” later expressing direct dissatisfaction with Putin and floating the idea of additional sanctions.
Russia Responds: “Trump Underestimated the Complexity”
The Kremlin responded swiftly. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Trump’s shifting tone shows he now realizes the Ukraine issue is “far more complex than he initially assumed.” Moscow continues to favor diplomatic solutions but sees Trump’s pivot as a significant recalibration.
If Trump unveils a NATO-backed offensive arms package as expected, Ukraine may be on the brink of a new phase in its conflict with Russia. As the world waits for “tomorrow,” all eyes turn to Washington.
