EU–US Trade Pact: Von der Leyen Says 15% Tariff Is the “Best Achievable Outcome” Amid Energy and Pharma Cooperation
On July 27, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. President Donald Trump jointly announced a new EU–U.S. trade agreement, covering multiple key sectors including energy, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals.
🚗 15% Tariff on Automobiles and Pharmaceuticals
During the joint press conference, von der Leyen confirmed that both sides agreed to impose a uniform 15% tariff on automobiles and pharmaceutical products. She stressed that “a 15% tariff is the best outcome the European Commission could achieve under the current circumstances.”
She described it as a realistic compromise, balancing the interests of European industries with the stability of transatlantic trade.
⛽ LNG Imports: Reducing Russian Dependence, Strengthening US–EU Energy Ties
On energy, von der Leyen acknowledged that the EU remains heavily reliant on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). She welcomed the agreement to increase LNG imports from the U.S., calling it a strategic alternative with competitive pricing and stable supply.
“Strengthening energy cooperation with the U.S. not only benefits market stability in Europe, but also enhances our strategic autonomy in energy security,” she said.
🥃 Spirits Tariff Still Undecided, Full Framework to Be Released Soon
While progress was made in several sectors, von der Leyen admitted that negotiations over tariffs on alcoholic spirits remain unresolved. Talks are ongoing.
She noted that the current agreement represents a broad framework, and technical details and implementation mechanisms will be released in the coming weeks.
🧾 Summary: Progress Through Pragmatism
The preliminary deal is seen as one of the most substantial steps forward in EU–U.S. trade relations in recent years. Despite unresolved issues, the alignment on key sectors like automobiles, energy, and pharmaceuticals lays a strong foundation for future negotiations.
Analysts note that the deal reflects the EU’s efforts to diversify partnerships and achieve economic stability amid the dual pressures of post-pandemic recovery and geopolitical uncertainty.
