"A Matter of Class": Barça Channel Mocks Modrić, While Real Madrid Once Honored Iniesta

Barcelona's official channel sparked outrage after mocking Luka Modrić during a live stream. In stark contrast, Real Madrid previously paid heartfelt tribute to Barça legend Andrés Iniesta, highlighting a striking difference in club culture.

Barcelona's YouTube channel recently drew criticism after two commentators made sarcastic remarks about Luka Modrić, who just ended his illustrious 13-year stint at Real Madrid. Though they claimed it was “just a joke,” the backlash has been intense.

During the stream, the commentators said: “We haven’t given Modrić the farewell he deserves. His last major contribution to Madrid was a crucial assist... for Koundé.” This referred to the Copa del Rey final, where Modrić, coming on as a substitute, mispassed the ball directly to Koundé, who scored the decisive goal in Barça’s 3-2 victory.

Despite later clarifying their comments, many fans found the remarks disrespectful, especially given Modrić’s legacy. Reactions like “classless,” “this is why people hate Barça,” and “how dare you mock a legend” flooded social media.

In contrast, Real Madrid showed a very different approach last year. Following a legends' El Clásico match in Japan, Madrid honored Andrés Iniesta with a customized No.6 jersey and flowers — a gesture praised by fans across the globe.

Sport, a pro-Barça outlet, later stated that the commentators’ opinions “do not reflect the official stance of the club,” likening it to similar incidents on Real Madrid’s radio. Still, the damage seems done.

The episode reignites the cultural rivalry between Spain’s biggest clubs, where sportsmanship and public perception play as much a role as performance on the pitch.
