[Chip War Intensifies] Intel Prepares 3D Cache Comeback, AMD Responds with Dual V-Cache Design for the AI Era

[Tech Update | August 6, 2025]
As AMD’s 3D V-Cache X3D processors continue to dominate gaming and high-performance computing markets, Intel is preparing a strong comeback. According to recent reports, Intel has added a new model to its roadmap under the upcoming Nova Lake desktop platform, featuring dual Big Last Level Cache (BLLC) units with a total capacity exceeding 200MB—a significant leap from earlier estimates of 140MB with a single BLLC.

This suggests that Intel is adopting a similar cache design to AMD, with 64MB per 3D cache unit—mirroring the structure of AMD’s current V-Cache.

However, Intel’s 3D cache technology is not expected to debut until late 2026, giving AMD a critical time advantage—and the company is seizing the moment.

🔥 AMD Prepares Dual V-Cache Zen 5 Chips for AI-Era Demands

Leaks indicate AMD is developing two new Zen 5 X3D processors featuring enhanced cache for high-performance tasks:

  1. Ryzen 7 9700X3D
    • 8 cores / 16 threads
    • 96MB cache
    • 120W TDP
  2. Next-gen Ryzen 9 X3D (unnamed)
    • 16 cores / 32 threads
    • 192MB cache
    • 200W TDP

This represents a major leap from the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which tops out at 144MB cache and 170W TDP. The new 192MB configuration likely indicates dual CCDs, each integrated with 3D cache—potentially 64MB on one and 48MB on the other, suggesting an asymmetrical layout.

Back in early 2024, AMD acknowledged the dual V-Cache setup wasn’t economically ideal for mainstream use. But with AI inference workloads and LLMs (Large Language Models) gaining ground, the demand for more cache makes the investment worthwhile.

⚔️ Intel vs AMD: Cache War for the Future of AI

Though Intel’s 3D cache CPUs are still in development, the move has already stirred anticipation. Meanwhile, AMD is taking advantage of its first-mover edge, aiming to dominate not just gaming, but also AI and multitasking-intensive markets with ultra-high cache chips.

The cache battle is no longer just a matter of performance—it's about securing strategic ground in the AI-driven computing era.
