TikTok’s Fate Still Uncertain? Trump Hints at Another Extension

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he may once again extend the deadline for ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US operations. Just days earlier, the White House launched its official TikTok account, sparking speculation over a shift in government stance.

Under legislation passed in 2024, known as the “TikTok Act,” ByteDance was required to sell TikTok’s US assets or face a nationwide ban. Since taking office, however, Trump has refrained from strictly enforcing the law and has granted multiple extensions. The most recent deadline was postponed to September 17, 2025.

Responding to reporters’ questions, Trump dismissed bipartisan concerns over TikTok’s national security risks, saying the issue had been “greatly exaggerated.” He also described himself as “a fan of TikTok,” adding that “until the complex issues are resolved, we just need to push the deadline back a little further.”

His remarks suggest that TikTok’s future in the US remains uncertain. With the presidential election approaching, the Trump administration’s position could significantly shape not only TikTok’s business outlook but also the broader dynamics of US-China tech rivalry and the American social media landscape.
