Newborn Buried Alive in India Battles for Life Amid Gender Bias Concerns

A 20-day-old baby girl from Uttar Pradesh, India, is clinging to life after being discovered buried alive—an incident that has once again cast a harsh spotlight on the country’s gender bias against girls.

A Shocking Discovery

The infant was found by sheer chance in Shahjahanpur district when a shepherd grazing his goats heard faint cries from beneath a mound of earth. Moving closer, he noticed a tiny hand sticking out of the mud. Alarmed, he called villagers, who immediately informed the police. Officers rushed to the scene and dug the baby out, still alive but in distress.

Fighting Against the Odds

The baby was rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit of the government-run medical college and hospital. Dr. Rajesh Kumar, the medical college principal, told the BBC that the child had been “smeared in dirt and gasping for air” with mud clogging her mouth and nostrils.

“She was in a critical condition, showing signs of hypoxia (oxygen deficiency). She had insect bites and had likely been attacked by an animal,” Dr. Kumar explained. “At first we noticed slight improvement after 24 hours, but her condition has since deteriorated due to infection. The prognosis is grave, but we are doing everything possible to save her.”

A team of specialists, including a plastic surgeon, is working tirelessly to stabilize her fragile condition. Doctors believe the child was found relatively soon after being buried because her wounds were still fresh.

Authorities have not yet identified the baby’s parents. Police confirmed that the state’s child helpline has been informed, and efforts are underway to ensure the infant receives full protection and care if she survives.

This heartbreaking case is not an isolated incident. In 2019, a premature newborn girl was also discovered buried alive in a clay pot in India—a case that shocked the nation. After weeks in hospital, she survived.

India continues to grapple with one of the worst gender ratios in the world, largely driven by a deep-rooted preference for sons. Girls are often perceived as a financial burden, particularly in poorer communities, leading to widespread foeticide and infanticide over generations.

Campaigners say while most unwanted female foetuses are aborted through illegal sex-determination clinics, many cases of newborn girls being abandoned—or worse, deliberately killed—still persist.
