Manchester United Closing in on Belgian Goalkeeper Lammens: Possible Debut on Saturday as Onana Faces Pressure

Manchester United are accelerating their goalkeeper reinforcement plan. Senne Lammens, the 23-year-old Belgian international, has already reached a personal agreement with the club, and talks with Royal Antwerp are in the final stages. The deal is expected to be officially announced before the weekend, with Lammens potentially unveiled at Old Trafford ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.
Transfer Details: Small Gap in Valuation
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Lammens has accepted a long-term contract at United, with wages significantly lower than those linked to Gianluigi Donnarumma or Emiliano Martínez. This explains why United opted for Lammens over more expensive alternatives.
Manchester United have proposed a package worth €17 million plus add-ons, reaching around €20 million, while Royal Antwerp are holding out for €25 million. The gap is not insurmountable, and with Lammens eager to join, both sides are expected to strike an agreement before the deadline.
Change of Plans: Goalkeeper Weakness Forces Acceleration
Initially, United planned to bring in a new goalkeeper only if André Onana or Altay Bayındır departed. However, early-season errors from the goalkeeping department have cost points, leading manager Rúben Amorim to demand reinforcements — a call that was fully backed by the board.
Reports from The Athletic and journalist Laurie Whitwell confirm that everyone from Amorim to INEOS executives, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe, acknowledged the urgent need to address the issue. This marks a major shift in United’s transfer policy.
Onana’s Position: Staying, but Under Fire
Although Onana will not be sold this summer, his starting spot is no longer secure. United hope that Lammens’ arrival will create genuine competition, pushing Onana to raise his performance levels — or risk being replaced.
Complicating matters further, Onana is set to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon at the end of the year, leaving United exposed. Former Italian goalkeeper Antonio Fontana even claimed that Onana is “unpopular” among teammates due to his flashy and attention-seeking behavior.
United’s Strategy: Low-Cost, High-Value Move
Compared to chasing expensive names like Donnarumma, signing Lammens is seen as a low-cost, high-upside investment. The deal fits within United’s wage structure and provides long-term benefits while addressing an immediate concern.
Conclusion:
If completed, the signing of Lammens could become one of United’s most important moves of the season. His arrival will not only reshape the goalkeeper hierarchy but may also decide André Onana’s long-term future at Old Trafford. The battle for the No. 1 shirt has only just begun.
