U.S. Deepens Bet on Intel: Beyond Investment, Actively Securing Customer Orders

The U.S. government is going all-in on Intel. Beyond acquiring a stake in the company, Washington is now taking on the role of “sales agent,” actively helping Intel secure key domestic customer orders to strengthen its semiconductor foundry competitiveness.
More Than Just Capital
Reports indicate the U.S. government has acquired about 10% of Intel’s shares, but the agreement extends further. Washington has committed to assisting Intel in reaching potential major clients, ensuring that advanced process nodes like Intel 18A can achieve large-scale manufacturing within the United States.
Intel executives admit that without significant incentives and order guarantees, it will be difficult to compete with rivals such as TSMC. CEO Pat Gelsinger has also warned that Intel could be forced to abandon its most advanced technologies if demand falls short.
Apple and NVIDIA in the Picture
With government backing, Intel is expected to attract orders from Apple, NVIDIA, and other leading tech firms, bolstering its position in high-end semiconductor manufacturing.
Meanwhile, Samsung of South Korea is reportedly considering an alliance with Intel to leverage U.S. government support and strengthen its place in the global chip race.
Risks and Uncertainty Remain
Despite the ambitious plans, skepticism persists within the industry. Some analysts argue that mere equity investment is not enough to ensure Intel’s turnaround. U.S. financial institutions have also flagged potential risks, including:
- Share dilution concerns
- Possible backlash from China
These uncertainties suggest that even with government endorsement, Intel still faces tough challenges in reviving its foundry business.
Conclusion:
The U.S. commitment to Intel has gone beyond financing, extending directly into supply chain support. Whether this bold strategy can succeed against fierce global competition remains to be seen.
