LV’s ¥55,500 Lobster Bag Sparks Controversy: Creative or Confusing?

Luxury brand Louis Vuitton has launched a new mini handbag called “LOBSTER” on its official Chinese website, priced at a hefty ¥55,500. The bag’s bold lobster-shaped design has stirred debate on social media, with many netizens questioning its aesthetic and value.
According to the product description, the bag is crafted from LV’s classic coated canvas and natural cowhide leather, featuring articulated tail fins with lettered scales, leather legs, and padded lobster claws. It fits essentials like a phone, keys, and cards, and can be carried by hand, over the shoulder, or crossbody.
Reactions online have been mixed, with some users joking that luxury fashion is becoming “increasingly unrelatable” and full of bizarre yet expensive ideas. In response, LV’s customer service stated that the lobster bag is a newly released item from this season’s collection, inspired by the designer’s sea fishing trip. “This season includes several pieces featuring marine motifs like fish and shrimp,” the representative noted.
Despite its quirky launches, LV's parent company LVMH is facing performance pressure. In its 2025 H1 earnings report, LVMH reported a 4% drop in revenue and a 15% decline in operating profit. The fashion and leather goods division — accounting for nearly half of LVMH’s total revenue — was the worst performer, with a 7% drop in organic sales and a 9% YoY decline in Q2.
To counter the downturn, LVMH implemented its third price increase of the year on August 1, with an average hike of 2%. Popular LV items such as the Medium Carryall and Speedy bags also saw notable price adjustments.
Editor’s Take:
LV’s lobster bag is a reminder that in luxury fashion, the line between artistic innovation and consumer disconnect is razor-thin. While bold designs attract attention, straying too far from practicality or aesthetic norms may alienate even loyal fans — especially during a market slowdown.
