After years of repeated delays, America’s next-generation high-speed train has finally entered service. The much-anticipated debut, however, comes with a bittersweet twist: the new train is only about 20 km/h faster than its predecessor and still takes a full seven hours to cover the 700 km journey — offering no real time savings for passengers.

1. A Milestone for U.S. Passenger Rail

Last Thursday marked a historic moment for U.S. rail travel as Amtrak’s Next-Generation Acela officially began service on the busy Boston–New York–Washington D.C. Northeast Corridor (NEC).

The sleek new train now runs two round trips daily between Boston and Washington, departing in the early morning and arriving around 1 p.m. — a trip that still takes roughly seven hours. Upon arrival at Washington Union Station, Amtrak hosted a celebratory event, hailing the train as a symbol of the future of American high-speed rail.

The journey to this launch has been long — over nine years since the project was first announced. Originally slated for 2021, the rollout was repeatedly postponed due to manufacturing defects, infrastructure upgrades, and testing delays.

Still, the enthusiasm among U.S. officials was palpable. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy declared it “the next step in accelerating along the East Coast” and announced that the Department of Transportation would take direct control of Washington Union Station while investing $43 million to upgrade New York’s Penn Station.

Amtrak’s Chief Commercial Officer Elliot Hamlisch called the train “one of the most advanced high-speed trains in the world,” noting that it draws heavily from Europe’s best technology.

But both stopped short of discussing travel time improvements — likely because the new Acela is no faster in practice. In fact, in some cases, it could be 10 minutes slower than the old model over the Boston–Washington route.

2. High-Speed Rail… But Not by Global Standards

While branded as “America’s high-speed train,” the new Acela is designed by France’s Alstom, based on the TGV platform, and built at its New York plant. The U.S. — despite being the world’s largest economy — does not have homegrown high-speed rail technology.

Historically, U.S. rail was once the envy of the world. In the 19th century, it drove westward expansion and industrialization. But post–World War II, massive investment in the Interstate Highway System and the growth of the airline industry caused passenger rail to collapse. By 1971, Amtrak was formed to save what remained, but it has always operated under severe budget constraints, with little capacity for innovation or high-speed rail development.

Globally, trains with design speeds over 250 km/h — like Japan’s Shinkansen, China’s CRH, France’s TGV, and Germany’s ICE — are considered true high-speed rail. While the new Acela is technically capable of 300 km/h, U.S. infrastructure can’t support those speeds. On the Northeast Corridor, it tops out at 260 km/h — barely faster than the previous generation.

Why? Because a true high-speed rail system requires specialized, purpose-built tracks with gentle curves, minimal grade changes, and advanced signaling — none of which exist on the NEC. Instead, the Acela shares a century-old, winding track with commuter and freight trains.

To adapt, Alstom equipped the train with tilting technology to maintain speed on curves, and anti-derailment systems to prevent disasters like the 2015 Philadelphia crash, where a train derailed after entering an 80 km/h curve at 170 km/h, killing eight.

Even with these upgrades, the new Acela’s performance falls far short of European counterparts — France’s TGV can reach 320 km/h in regular service and set a record of 575 km/h in testing.

3. A Crucial but Constrained Corridor

The NEC — home to nearly 60 million people in Boston, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington — is the busiest passenger rail corridor in the U.S. It’s also the country’s best candidate for true high-speed rail, given its population density (10x the U.S. average) and economic importance.

Still, the current Boston–Washington trip remains a seven-hour journey, even on the new train. Multiple stops and shared tracks mean its top speed is rarely sustained. In the best case, passengers save just 20 minutes compared to the old Acela.

Flying is still faster — a direct flight takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, and even factoring in travel to and from airports, total time is around five hours. Airfares are often comparable to Acela tickets, making planes the more practical option for many.

Where the new Acela does shine is passenger comfort. The ride is smoother, seats are larger, windows are bigger, and onboard amenities are modernized. Free 5G Wi-Fi and at-seat power outlets enable full mobile productivity — a major leap from the early-2000s-era trains it replaces.

Amtrak will gradually replace its 15 older Acela sets with 28 new ones over the next two years, part of a $2.45 billion NEC modernization program that also upgrades major stations and increases track capacity.

4. California’s High-Speed Rail — Still a Distant Dream

Outside the Northeast, America’s passenger trains are far slower. California, with 40 million residents, has long needed a high-speed link between the Bay Area and Los Angeles. The 500 km trip takes over 9 hours by train — making rail irrelevant for most travelers.

The California High-Speed Rail project, approved in 2008, has been plagued by cost overruns, political battles, and delays. Originally budgeted at $33 billion, costs are now estimated at $89–128 billion. The first segment under construction — a 200 km stretch in the sparsely populated Central Valley — is far from the major cities it aims to connect.

Funding gaps remain huge, and recent political shifts have put federal support in jeopardy. Full San Francisco–Los Angeles service is now decades away, if it happens at all.

Florida’s Brightline — often called “America’s first high-speed rail” — is already running between Miami and Orlando, but with an average speed of 110 km/h, it’s only marginally faster than driving.

The Bottom Line

The new Acela is a symbolic victory for U.S. passenger rail — proof that modernization is possible, but also a reminder of how far behind America is in true high-speed rail. It’s a step forward, but without dedicated infrastructure, its speed potential remains locked away.

For now, the biggest winners are passengers who value comfort, Wi-Fi, and a smoother ride over sheer speed. But for the U.S. to compete with Europe and Asia in rail travel, it will take far more than a new train — it will require rebuilding the tracks beneath it.
