September 1, IT Home — Market research firm Statcounter has released its August 2025 desktop browser market report, revealing that Google Chrome continues to strengthen its dominance. The popular browser now commands a remarkable 70.25% market share, securing the top spot and posting a 0.5% increase compared to last month.
According to the data, Microsoft Edge remains in second place, though it trails far behind Chrome with an 11.8% share, edging up by just 0.01% month-over-month. Apple’s Safari holds third place at 6.34%, marking a 0.16% decline from July.
Rounding out the top five are Mozilla Firefox and Opera. Firefox’s share dipped to 4.94% (down 0.36%), while Opera dropped to 2.06% (down 0.13%).
Industry outlet Neowin notes that while the competitive ranking in August remains largely unchanged, the desktop browser landscape is rapidly being transformed by the integration of AI-powered features. Major developers are racing to embed artificial intelligence capabilities into their browsers to attract new users and retain existing ones. Even the traditionally “independent-minded” Firefox has joined the trend, introducing an AI-powered tab feature.
However, not all users are on board. Some Firefox users have criticized the AI additions, claiming they lead to high CPU usage and rapid battery drain. Others have gone further, dismissing them as “useless” or even “garbage features,” urging Mozilla to stop “blindly following trends” and focus on meaningful improvements instead.
