Nvidia Commits $100 Billion to OpenAI in Bold AI Push
-
Nvidia, the world’s most valuable technology company, has announced a landmark investment of up to $100 billion (£73bn) in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. The deal, unveiled by both firms, cements a strategic partnership designed to supercharge the next wave of artificial intelligence.
As part of the agreement, Nvidia will supply its cutting-edge high-performance chips—hardware that forms the backbone of modern AI. The investment underscores how critical advanced computing power has become in the escalating race for AI dominance, where American firms face rising competition from China.
“This marks the next leap forward and will power the next era of intelligence,” declared Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, as he outlined plans for building next-generation AI infrastructure through OpenAI’s data centers.
The announcement follows a string of bold moves by Nvidia, including a $5 billion investment in Intel and £2 billion in the UK’s AI sector. Together with OpenAI, Nvidia is already collaborating with a global network of tech leaders—Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate among them—to develop what they describe as the “world’s most advanced AI infrastructure.”
But the AI battlefield is far from simple. The dominance of U.S. firms is increasingly challenged by Chinese players, particularly DeepSeek-R1, which has quickly emerged as a formidable competitor. Nvidia itself is also facing geopolitical turbulence. Just last week, Chinese regulators accused the company of violating anti-monopoly laws, though no specific breaches were detailed. Beijing has reportedly ordered its top tech firms to halt purchases of Nvidia’s AI chips.
Huang voiced his disappointment in an interview with the BBC, while also navigating pressure at home. Nvidia and rival AMD recently agreed to pay the U.S. government 15% of their Chinese revenues to secure export licenses, a deal intended to soften Washington’s ban on AI chip sales to China.
With this colossal $100 billion commitment, Nvidia is doubling down on its vision: building the world’s most powerful AI systems and shaping the global future of intelligence.
