Yangtze Memory Reportedly Eyes Entry into the DRAM Market, Including High-Bandwidth Memory

September 26 — TechWeb — The explosive rise of generative artificial intelligence over the past two years has created fresh opportunities for the semiconductor industry. Demand for computing chips and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) has surged, driving strong performance for global leaders such as NVIDIA and SK Hynix.

According to the latest reports from international media, China’s leading memory chip manufacturer, Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC), is now exploring expansion into the high-bandwidth memory market—an area where demand has been sharply boosted by AI-driven workloads.

Currently, YMTC is China’s largest NAND flash manufacturer and operates as a full-stack IDM enterprise, integrating design, manufacturing, packaging, testing, and system-level solutions. Its portfolio includes 3D NAND wafers, embedded storage chips, as well as consumer and enterprise solid-state drives. These solutions are widely deployed across mobile communications, consumer electronics, PCs, servers, and data centers worldwide.

Industry insiders revealed that YMTC plans to diversify its business beyond NAND flash into DRAM production, with a particular focus on high-bandwidth memory. One source disclosed that part of YMTC’s new semiconductor manufacturing facility under development in Wuhan may be dedicated to DRAM production lines.

Adding weight to these reports, YMTC was also said to have registered a new subsidiary in Wuhan earlier this month, with a substantial registered capital of 20.7 billion yuan—a move that further signals its ambitions to compete in the next wave of AI-driven memory technologies.
