Nepal Humble West Indies in Historic T20 Series Win
-
West Indies cricket has suffered another crushing blow after being bundled out for just 83 runs in Sharjah, as Nepal sealed a landmark series victory with a resounding 90-run win.
Ranked 18th in the world and playing their first-ever T20 series against a full-member nation, Nepal have stunned the cricketing world by wrapping up the three-match contest with a game to spare.
A New Low for the Windies
Chasing 174, West Indies faltered badly, with only three players reaching double figures. Jason Holder top-scored with 21 from 15 balls, but wickets tumbled around him as the Caribbean side collapsed from 63-4 to 83 all out in just 17.1 overs.
This dismal total marks the lowest score ever by a full-member nation against an associate. To compound the misery, the 90-run defeat is the biggest margin of victory for an associate against a full member in T20 international history.
It’s another bitter chapter for West Indies cricket, following their historic collapse to 27 all out against Australia in July — the second-lowest Test total ever and the worst since 1955. They also failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup and currently sit outside the qualification spots for the 2027 edition.
Nepal Rise to the Occasion
Earlier, Nepal had set a competitive total of 173-6 from their 20 overs, powered by a brilliant 100-run fourth-wicket stand between Aasif Sheikh and Sundeep Jora. Sheikh anchored the innings with an unbeaten 68 from 47 balls, while Jora entertained the crowd with five towering sixes.
With the ball, left-arm spinner Kushal Malla Alam starred with 4-24, while Kushal Bhurtel grabbed 3-16 to rip through the Windies’ batting order.
The result is a milestone moment for Nepal, coached by Australian Stuart Law, who will now carry this momentum into the qualifiers for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Nepal have already appeared in the 2014 and 2024 editions, but this series win firmly establishes them as a rising force in international cricket.
What’s Next
The third T20 match will take place on Tuesday, though the series result is already beyond doubt. Meanwhile, West Indies’ woes continue, with fast bowler Alzarri Joseph ruled out of next month’s two-Test series against India after a recurrence of his back injury.
For Nepal, this is more than just a victory—it is a statement: the gap between associate nations and cricket’s traditional powers is narrowing fast.
