Musk Condemns EU’s €120 Million Penalty on X, Sparks Debate Over the Bloc’s Future

On December 7, IT Home reported that on December 6 local time, American entrepreneur Elon Musk sharply criticized the European Union’s decision to fine his social media platform, X, €120 million (approximately RMB 989 million at current exchange rates).

“The EU not only imposed such an absurd fine on X, but also targeted me personally—this is completely outrageous!” Musk wrote on X. He added that this action demands a direct response, not only toward the EU as an institution but also toward those who initiated the move against him. In subsequent posts, he went even further, saying, “The EU should be abolished,” while also stating, “I love Europe, but I don’t love the EU as a bureaucratic monster.”

The controversy has also drawn a strong response from the U.S. government. American officials condemned the EU’s penalty against X, arguing that it unfairly targets U.S. companies. U.S. President Donald Trump warned that if the European Union continues to punish American technology firms, the United States would impose additional tariffs on the EU in retaliation.

On December 5, the European Commission released an official statement announcing its first-ever “non-compliance decision” under the Digital Services Act, formally confirming the €120 million fine against social media platform X. The decision marks a significant moment in the EU’s enforcement of its sweeping new digital regulations.
