New Study: Coronary Heart Disease Linked Not Just to Fat—But Also to Two Types of Meat and Four Key Risk Factors

Every heartbeat fuels life itself, yet cardiovascular diseases remain a leading threat worldwide. Among them, coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common, caused by atherosclerosis narrowing the arteries that supply the heart.

A large-scale Oxford University study involving 1.4 million participants over 30 years revealed that:

  • Red meat (beef, pork, lamb) and processed meat (bacon, ham, sausages) significantly increase CHD risk.
  • Eating just 50g of processed meat daily raises the risk by 18%.

🔎 Why is this the case?

  1. Red meat is rich in saturated fat, raising LDL cholesterol;
  2. Meat intake promotes TMAO production in the gut, linked to inflammation;
  3. Processed meats are high in sodium, fueling hypertension and even cancer risks.

By contrast, white meat (poultry, fish, seafood) provides lean protein and heart-friendly nutrients like EPA and DHA.

But diet is only part of the equation. Four major risk factors stand out:

  • Hypertension (especially resistant high blood pressure);
  • Unhealthy diets high in salt, fat, and oil;
  • Lifestyle choices, such as smoking and alcohol;
  • Genetics, with family history increasing risk by up to 70%.

✅ Prevention and management strategies:

  • Adopt a low-salt, low-fat diet, with smaller, frequent meals;
  • Quit smoking and reduce alcohol;
  • Control calorie intake while boosting fish, legumes, whole grains, and fiber.

Bottom line: Protecting your heart starts on your plate—and continues with healthier daily habits.

Although he scored 24 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and added 4 assists and 3 blocks, his 6 turnovers and only 3 points in the fourth quarter proved costly as the Thunder lost the game and fell behind 1–2 in the series. Still, Shai made history by surpassing Kevin Durant’s franchise playoff scoring record with 572 points in a single postseason.
