Record-Breaking Surge in EV Charging During China’s 2025 National Day and Mid-Autumn Holiday

According to CCTV News, citing data from the National Energy Administration, China’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sector hit a historic high during the 2025 National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, with nationwide charging volume reaching unprecedented levels. Across the country, multiple regions rolled out comprehensive measures to ensure seamless charging services for millions of travelers.

Between midnight on October 1 and 6 p.m. on October 3, total charging volume on national expressways soared to 43.81 million kilowatt-hours, marking a 51.33% year-on-year increase. The daily average charging demand was 2.54 times higher than usual weekdays, reflecting both the explosive growth of China’s NEV ownership and the effectiveness of its expanding charging infrastructure.

To support the surge in travel, local authorities accelerated the deployment of charging and supercharging stations. In Weihai, Shandong Province, four new liquid-cooled supercharging stations went into service during the holiday, capable of fully charging compatible NEVs in just 10 minutes. Each charging gun can deliver up to 480 kilowatts of powereight times faster than conventional chargers—significantly enhancing the travel experience for NEV owners.

Meanwhile, along the southern Sichuan–Tibet route, Ganzi Prefecture’s power grid operators have established 58 charging stations, including 12 ultra-fast sites, ensuring that drivers can find a charging point roughly every 60 kilometers—a critical boost for long-distance travelers crossing the mountainous terrain.

In Yancheng, local power authorities upgraded transformer capacity in highway service areas from 1,120 kW to 4,000 kW and installed 24 additional charging stations. As a result, overall charging efficiency improved by more than threefold compared to the same period last year.

As of the end of August, China’s total EV charging infrastructure exceeded 17 million units, representing a year-on-year growth of over 50%. With the national charging network becoming ever denser and more intelligent, China continues to lead the world in enabling the large-scale adoption of clean, electric mobility.
