TVB’s Oldest Best Actor Makes a Triumphant Return — After 31 Years in Canada, He Plans to Settle Down in Mainland China

The Mid-Autumn Festival has just passed — and for many, it brings back memories of TVB’s classic hit Moonlight Resonance. Even after all these years, this beloved drama remains a joy to rewatch, filled with touching performances that have left a lasting mark on audiences.

Among them, veteran actor Ha Yu (夏雨), now 79, gave an unforgettable portrayal of “Jo Bao,” a role that not only captured viewers’ hearts but also earned him the TVB Best Actor Award, making him the oldest winner in the network’s history.

In recent years, Ha Yu has gradually stepped away from the limelight, enjoying a semi-retired life in Canada. He rarely appears in public, preferring to spend his days traveling, relaxing, and catching up with old friends — a life of leisure well deserved. But recently, fans were delighted to see him make a return to acting, starring in the new short drama City Storm (邑城風雲), reigniting his passion for performance after many years away.

Back in April, during a visit to Zhongshan, Ha Yu shared his love for the region’s slower pace of life and hinted at the possibility of relocating there. “Yes, I’ve been thinking about it,” he said. “I just want to see if I can adapt to the environment. Canada is great, but in the end, you have to choose the place you love most for your later years.”

He added that life has been peaceful and fulfilling, even after spending 31 years in Canada — but ultimately, it’s the simplicity and warmth of life in mainland China that he cherishes most.

When asked about his thoughts on filming short dramas compared to traditional TV series, Ha Yu smiled: “There isn’t much difference. Each episode of this short drama runs about ten minutes, and there are over twenty episodes in total — it’s quite similar to a regular TV series.”

Behind the scenes, Ha Yu’s professionalism shines through. Photos from the set show him wearing a straw hat and a towel over his shoulder, working tirelessly under the blazing sun. Yet, he never complains. “Don’t ever say it’s hard work,” he laughed. “In my dictionary, I never tell others I’m tired. Many people wish they could experience this kind of hard work — saying it’s tough almost feels like showing off. Wealth never falls from the sky; you must put in the effort before you reap the rewards.”
