Buffett’s $31 Billion Japan Bet: A 4-Year, 5x Return Signals His Long-Term Faith in Eastern Value
Since first revealing his stake in Japan’s trading giants on his 90th birthday in 2020, Warren Buffett has grown Berkshire Hathaway’s holdings from $6.3 billion to over $31 billion. The “Oracle of Omaha” continues to quietly increase his stake — even breaching the once self-imposed 10% limit — betting big on Japan’s overlooked value stocks. Here’s what this tells us about his long-term vision.
1. Strategic Accumulation: Stakes in Japanese Trading Houses Top 10%
Recent disclosures show Berkshire Hathaway now holds 10.1% of Mitsui & Co., worth around $7.1 billion. Similar increases have occurred in Mitsubishi Corp., where its stake rose from 9.7% in March to 10.2% by August. Analysts believe Berkshire has also approached or exceeded 10% in Itochu, Marubeni, and Sumitomo Corp.
2. From $6.3B to $31B: The 392% Surge
Buffett’s initial $6.3 billion investment in 2020 has now quintupled to $31 billion, driven by two factors:
- Continuous accumulation by Berkshire;
- Share price gains between 227% and 551% among the five companies.
This investment has become one of Buffett’s most successful global plays in recent years.
3. Why Japan? Buffett's Logic is Classic Value Investing
Buffett told CNBC in 2023 that he was drawn to these stocks because they were “ridiculously cheap, especially relative to interest rates.” The trading houses offer diversified revenue streams, strong cash flows, and steady dividends — aligning perfectly with Berkshire's value philosophy.
4. From “5% Promise” to “10% Breach”: The Long Game Unfolds
Initially, Berkshire promised not to exceed 10% ownership without permission. But as the investment proved resilient, all five firms agreed to relax this limit. In his 2024 shareholder letter, Buffett wrote: “You may see Berkshire’s stake in all five increase over time — we plan to hold them for 50 years or even forever.”
Conclusion: Buffett’s Boldest Global Play May Be in the East
This move shows Buffett’s continued belief that undervalued, cash-generating businesses deserve long-term trust — no matter where they are. His Japan strategy may well become a defining legacy of his final investment chapter.
