In a thrilling international friendly, Ecuador (FIFA No.24) held Mexico (FIFA No.14) to a 1–1 draw in Mexico City, extending their unbeaten streak to 13 matches while Mexico, the 2026 World Cup co-hosts, remain winless in four straight games.
Coming into the match, Mexico had gone two draws and one loss in their last three outings, while Ecuador had shown better form with one win and two draws. Historically, Ecuador held the upper hand in recent meetings — unbeaten in the last three clashes (one win, two draws). Still, Mexican fans were confident their team would finally bounce back at home.
The hosts struck early: in just the 3rd minute, Sánchez delivered a brilliant through ball, and 26-year-old Berterame calmly slotted it home to give Mexico a 1–0 lead.
Seventeen minutes later, Ecuador responded. Álcívar, also 26, stepped up to the penalty spot and converted with composure, leveling the score at 1–1.
Both sides created chances afterward, but neither managed to find the winner. When the final whistle blew, Ecuador celebrated another solid performance — remaining unbeaten in 13 consecutive matches — while Mexico’s winless streak stretched to four.
Statistically, Mexico dominated possession and total shots, but Ecuador had more shots on target, reflecting their sharper attacking efficiency.
Mexico started with Lozano, Berterame, Sánchez, and Montes, while Ecuador fielded veterans Valencia and Pacho among their key starters, showcasing strong depth on both sides.
