Ivanković: The Single Defensive Midfielder Is a Global Trend — What China Lacks Most Is a Midfield Brain

Former head coach of China’s national football team, Branko Ivanković, recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Chinese media. He addressed two major talking points — his “single defensive midfielder” system and the infamous 0–7 defeat to Japan.

Reflecting on that painful match, Ivanković admitted:
“Of course, the 0–7 loss to Japan was the biggest gap between my plan and the final result. The match went completely against our tactical vision. Sadly, it revealed our lack of confidence and the fear we had of Japan, one of Asia’s top teams. We were only 0–1 down in the first half, but that late goal before halftime made it 0–2 — and the team mentally collapsed. We lost faith, and the game fell apart.”

Responding to critics of his diamond midfield and single pivot formation, Ivanković explained:
“In modern football, playing with a single defensive midfielder is a global trend. My philosophy is to make the team more attack-oriented — to commit more players forward and play efficient, proactive football. Remember, China didn’t score a single goal in the Asian Cup — not against Qatar, Lebanon, or Tajikistan. I wanted us to be more aggressive, to take control of matches, and to build confidence. The double-pivot system is more defensive and conservative. I wanted to change that mentality — and in many games, I believe it worked.”

When asked if the Chinese national team lacks a true ‘midfield brain,’ Ivanković agreed without hesitation:
“I completely agree. Every successful team needs a leader on the pitch — someone who dictates the tempo, inspires teammates, and lifts the team even in tough moments. That’s what we call the team’s ‘brain.’ Without such a leader, it’s hard for any team to stay composed and organized. That’s exactly what the Chinese team is missing.”
