4-3! Shanghai Port Triumphs in a Rainy Thriller as Qingdao Hainiu Fall Fighting to the End
It was a night of passion, rain, and relentless football spirit. On October 17 at 18:00, Round 27 of the Chinese Super League saw Qingdao Hainiu host defending champions Shanghai Port in a dramatic seven-goal showdown. Despite Hainiu’s fierce resistance and fearless performance—“falling while standing tall”—Shanghai Port ultimately emerged victorious, edging out their opponents 4-3 to solidify their lead at the top of the table with 60 points.
The rain-soaked match began with high intensity from both sides. Relegation-threatened Hainiu had no choice but to fight for every ball, and they came out swinging. In the 11th minute, Augusto delivered a pinpoint assist, and Rankel-Ze’s powerful strike found the back of the net to give Hainiu a 1-0 lead at home.
Just three minutes later, Shanghai Port responded swiftly. Li Shuai sent in a precise cross from the left, and Gabriel rose above the defenders to head the ball into the net—1-1!
The tension quickly escalated. In the 16th minute, Rankel-Ze went down inside the box, prompting referee Wang Jing to initially award a penalty. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, and Rankel-Ze was booked for simulation—sparking anger among the home fans.
At the 31st minute, Vitor orchestrated a beautiful play, assisting Leonardo who chipped the goalkeeper with a composed finish to put Shanghai Port ahead 2-1.
But Hainiu refused to surrender. In the 37th minute, after Yan Junling’s initial save and Wang Shenchao’s failed clearance, Rankel-Ze seized the rebound to score his second of the night—2-2!
Then came a moment of brilliance in the 40th minute. Leonardo unleashed a stunning outside-foot strike from distance, curling the ball perfectly into the net—3-2! It was a world-class goal that left Hainiu coach Li Xiaopeng shaking his head in disbelief at the sheer precision and power of Shanghai Port’s foreign ace.
After the break, the rain intensified, making every touch and tackle more treacherous. Both teams traded substitutions and near misses. In the 61st minute, Gabriel almost extended the lead, but his powerful shot was denied by goalkeeper Han Rongze. At the 73rd minute, Gabriel missed another golden opportunity, while moments later, a chaotic scramble in front of Port’s goal nearly allowed Hainiu to equalize again.
As the clock ticked down, Shanghai Port’s persistence paid off. In the 89th minute, a brilliant combination between Li Xinxing and Leonardo on the right flank ended with Li cutting inside and calmly slotting the ball between the defender’s legs into the net—4-2! It was Li’s first goal of the season and the one that sealed the victory for Shanghai Port.
In stoppage time, Hainiu refused to give up. During a 94th-minute corner, Rankel-Ze attempted an overhead kick, and Song Wenjie was quick to follow up with a rebound goal to make it 3-4. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late.
When the final whistle blew, Shanghai Port walked off the drenched pitch with all three points, maintaining their place at the top of the league and moving one step closer to their third consecutive Super League title. Hainiu, though defeated, earned admiration for their courage and fighting spirit—a team that may have fallen, but never bowed.
