(Hong Kong, 7th) Tam Mei-kam, the mother of late Cantopop superstar Anita Mui, passed away on August 30 at the age of 102. Anita’s elder brother, Mui Kai-ming, held a press conference in Causeway Bay today (7th) to reveal plans for his mother’s burial.
Mui said he intends to bury his mother at the Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery. However, he admitted that payment for the burial plot has yet to be made and discussions with the funeral home are still ongoing.
When questioned about arrangements for obtaining his mother’s death certificate without having access to her identity card, Mui maintained that the document was currently with law enforcement authorities and said the matter had been handed over to his lawyer.
The press conference came amid a public dispute between Mui and veteran singer Maria Cordero, better known as “Fat Mama”. Cordero recently criticised Mui during the YouTube programme Entertainment Good Good Play, accusing him of relying financially on his mother and sister for years and focusing on their inheritance and trust fund.
Cordero also claimed that Mui had long been interested in gaining access to Anita Mui’s fund. She criticised him for allegedly focusing on obtaining money from others instead of earning his own income.
Mui strongly rejected the accusations during the press conference, saying such claims should be backed by evidence. He questioned why Cordero had publicly attacked him and said he reserved the right to pursue legal action over what he considered defamatory allegations.
Before the press conference, Mui had also released a statement responding to Cordero’s comments regarding the World Chinese and Western Medicine Anti-Cancer Foundation Association. According to Mui, the organisation was established by his mother, while Anita Mui donated HK$1 million to support its work in providing assistance to cancer patients.
Mui claimed he was in the United States at the time and was not involved in the organisation’s documents or operations, rejecting allegations that he had committed fraud.
He added that he would consider taking legal action after completing arrangements for his mother’s funeral.
Mui also questioned Cordero’s claim that she had watched Anita grow up from a young age. He maintained that the two had no personal dispute in the past and said he could not understand why she had chosen to publicly criticise him.
