On October 22, the NBA regular season tipped off with a blockbuster matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers were without their superstar LeBron James, who missed his first opening game in an incredible 23-season career. Without him, the Lakers struggled and fell 109–119 to the Warriors.

With LeBron sidelined, Luka Dončić carried the entire load for the Lakers. From start to finish, he was unstoppable—driving, shooting, creating, and leading. Dončić finished with 43 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, and 2 steals on an efficient 17-of-27 shooting. Yet, despite his brilliance, the lack of support from teammates meant his heroics weren’t enough to secure the win.

According to stats, Dončić became only the third player in Lakers history to score over 40 points in a season opener, joining the legendary Elgin Baylor and Kobe Bryant. He also became just the second guard in NBA history to post a 40+10+5 stat line in an opener—the other being none other than Michael Jordan himself.

A near triple-double masterpiece that echoes the greatness of Kobe and Jordan—yet victory slipped away. At this moment, no one misses LeBron more than Dončić. Until the King returns, high-scoring nights like this might become routine for Luka. For the Lakers to rise, others must step up and share the burden with their new leader.
