Nobel Laureate: In the Age of AI, Degrees May No Longer Matter

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into our lives, the long-held belief that a good degree equals a good future is being challenged.
Michael Levitt, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry and professor at Stanford University, shared a bold view in a recent interview:
“In the past, education was the gateway to knowledge. Now, AI gives everyone access to it.”
Levitt believes that as AI reshapes learning and creativity, formal education will lose much of its traditional weight.
He pointed out that many tech pioneers — Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, and Sergey Brin — all dropped out of college.
“Getting into top universities proves their intelligence, but their ideas mattered more than their classes.”
In the future, Levitt predicts that those who can effectively use AI may outperform traditional graduates.
“A smart young person without a degree, but skilled in AI, could be more competitive than someone with a prestigious diploma.”
AI has made knowledge instant and conversational — even someone who can’t read can now use voice commands to learn, create, or build.
This, Levitt says, is eroding the privilege once tied to elite education.
“Soon, the gap between an intelligent self-learner and a university graduate will be smaller than ever.”
So — do you agree that AI is redefining what truly matters in education?
