Solid-state batteries are becoming a major driving force in the next phase of new-energy vehicle development. Reporters have learned that China’s first large-capacity solid-state battery production line has been completed and is currently running small-batch trial manufacturing—marking a significant move toward industrialization.

Compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries, the main advantage of solid-state batteries lies in their fully solid structure, with no liquid components. This brings major improvements in driving range, safety, and heat resistance.

The breakthrough in “liquid-free” batteries is mainly attributed to two key innovations:
1. Optimized anode manufacturing process — traditional production requires slurry mixing, coating, and rolling as separate steps. The new dry-process technology integrates these steps into one, boosting efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
2. A new solid-state electrolyte — instead of liquid electrolytes, a self-developed solid electrolyte is used, considerably enhancing thermal stability and safety.

On the industrial side, GAC Group has built China’s first large-capacity solid-state battery production line capable of producing 60Ah automotive-grade solid-state batteries in volume.

Qi Hongzhong, head of new-energy power development at GAC’s R&D center, stated that the energy density of their solid-state battery is nearly double that of current mainstream batteries.
When used in today’s 500-km EVs, driving range could exceed 1000 km.
The development timeline is:

  • 2026 – small-batch vehicle installation tests
  • 2027–2030 – gradual mass production and scaled deployment
