(Tokyo, 29th) Japanese unicorn biomaterials company Spiber announced that it has secured business support from Maya Kawana, Chief Executive Officer of BOLD Inc. Public disclosures show that Kawana is the eldest daughter of Masayoshi Son, founder and CEO of SoftBank Group.

Masayoshi Son has rarely spoken publicly about his family over the past decades. Kawana’s recent public appearance and growing attention have nonetheless reignited discussions surrounding SoftBank’s succession plans. However, Son has repeatedly stressed that SoftBank is not a family-run business, and that its future leadership will be determined by artificial intelligence (AI) and professional management, rather than blood ties.

No involvement in SoftBank operations

According to Spiber, Kawana was born in April 1981, the same year SoftBank was founded. Her professional background includes joining Goldman Sachs Japan in 2004, working at AOKI BBT in 2008, joining U.S.-based data and software firm Afiniti’s Japan unit in 2017, and founding BOLD Inc. in December 2019, where she serves as CEO. She has also been appointed an independent director at Design Future and Ai ROBOTICS this year.

Kawana previously spent several years as a homemaker but has never held any position within SoftBank Group. Masayoshi Son, meanwhile, remains a globally renowned investor who has experienced significant ups and downs before reclaiming the title of Japan’s richest person this year.

Spiber stated that it has signed a business support agreement with Kawana, who is expected to begin providing support in the first half of next year upon fulfillment of the agreement’s conditions.

In the announcement, Kawana emphasized that her involvement is not aimed at an IPO or merger and acquisition, but rather at building a globally competitive biotechnology company. Spiber acknowledged that while it possesses strong technological development capabilities, it faces challenges in commercialization and social implementation. Kawana is expected to assist the company by restructuring production systems, optimizing resource allocation, and refining sales strategies to achieve economically sustainable growth.
